Electronics and Communication Engineering

 

     

         The department of Electronics and Communication Engineering was established during the inception of the institute, in the year 1995. The department grew into a full fledged one with two batches in the year 2001. The annual intake for undergraduate programme is currently 120 students. A Postgraduate programme in Signal Processing, with an annual intake of 18 students, was started in the year 2011. The department is an approved research centre under APJ Abdul Kalam Kerala Technological University (KTU) from 2016 and currently there are 5 research scholars in the department. With its state of the art facility and a highly qualified faculty, this department is the best among its counterparts in Kerala.

The focus of the department is to produce graduates and post graduates with strong fundamentals in electronics and communication domain and experience in the latest happenings of the industry, so that they can meet the upcoming challenges in the field. The undergraduate program provides a strong foundation in the fundamentals of engineering and science and a variety of electives to tailor studies to a specific technical interest. With a firm grounding in the basics, SCTCE Electronics students are well prepared for either post graduate studies or the high-tech corporate environment.

The ECE department includes some of the finest faculty members in the state who are highly qualified, experienced and dedicated, with a strong commitment to the advancement of knowledge among the students. The faculty has expertise in various fields of Electronics & Communication like Signal Processing, Image Processing, Applied Electronics, Communication Systems, VLSI & Embedded Systems, Optoelectronics, Microwave Engineering, Network Security, to name a few.  The department organizes several national and international conferences, seminars, workshops, faculty development programmes and community development programmes for the benefit of students, faculty and society.

The BTech course in Electronics and Communication Engg. was accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). The department is certified by International Organization for Standardization under ISO 9001:2000 and has been selected for first phase of World Bank aid under TEQIP. The department has consistently produced toppers in the university examinations and majority of the final year students use to be placed in leading organizations every year. A large number of our alumni are pursuing higher studies in premier institutions like IISc, IITs, NITs and IIMs in India and in reputed Universities abroad also.

PROGRAM SPECIFIC OUTCOMES (PSOs)

PSO1: Ability to acquire and update the principles and techniques in Electronics and Communication Engineering for the analysis of engineering problems.

PSO2: Ability to design and implement engineering solutions in Electronics and Communication Engineering with acquired technical knowledge with   an insight of social, economic, environmental and ethical aspects.

PSO3: Ability to communicate effectively and develop interpersonal skills in multidisciplinary areas, committed to professional ethics in diverse areas of engineering.

Organizational Structure

The Department is headed by the Head of Department (HOD) and each Program by the Program Coordinator (PC). The Department Advisory Board (DAB) acts as the apex advisory body and gives guidelines for the efficient functioning of the Department. Each Stream Committee coordinates the academic activities of the faculty under them. The DAB members, PAC members and responsibilities of each stream committee in the structure are depicted in Table .

Industry Interaction

The department takes initiatives to improve the entrepreneurial skills of students and to update them regarding the recent technological advancements indifferent fields of research. In order to achieve this goal, the students are encouraged to interact with the industry through training, internships and visits to the industry.The department arranges expert talks on various topics by eminent industry professionals to create an awareness of the modern technology adopted in the industry and the current advancements in research. The department has MoUs with various industries to strengthen the relationships with industry.

  • Department has MoU with Texas Instruments for the implementation of Texas Instruments University Programme in SCTCE in the areas of Advanced Microcontrollers, Robotics and IoT.
  • MoU with Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education to promote the quality of the technical education and to provide assistance for the research activities.
  • MoU with WebTek Labs Pvt. Ltd to deliver workshops.
  • MoU with Infosys, Mahindra, CDAC, BSNL and TATA Elxsi for training the students as per the industry standards.
  • Infosys Campus Connect is one such program implemented in the Institution which makes the students industry ready.
  • Mahindra Pride School and Mahindra is associated with the institution in providing soft skills as well as technical skills.
  • Technical support from Optical Image Processing Division, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC).
  • “Employability Enhancement training Programme (EETP)” is an initiative jointly organized by AICTE and BSNL to enhance the competency skills of the Graduating Student Youth.
  • Activ@TE is the initiative of TataElxsi for training the students in the institution during their final year by providing the stipend of Rs.7000/- per month. This was a pilot program launched only with this Institution on a trial basis

Infrastructure

The state of the art laboratories of the department nurture the inclination of the students towards research and development besides giving them the necessary and sufficient backing of practical knowledge that they need. The labs are equipped with hi-tech instruments such as Digital storage Oscilloscopes, Standalone Logic Analyzer, Optical Spectrum Analyzer, MSO, Prototype PCB machine, Microprocessor/ Microcontroller/DSP Assembly based kits etc. The software labs consists of high end PCs, ORCAD, PSPICE, Cosmism, Multisim, XILINX, MATLAB, LABVIEW and other simulation software commonly used by the industry. Audio visual presentations are done in classrooms and labs for effective teaching using Laptops, Netbooks, multimedia projectors etc. High speed leased line internet connectivity with Wi-fi and Optical fiber backbone is available.

Departmental Library

The department library is well equipped with a total of 1033 books of which 100 are PG related books, 700 are sponsored by TEQIP, and the rest are sponsored by PTA. In addition, various technical papers presented during seminars conducted by the students in the department, mini project and final year main project documentations are made available to the students for reference. Curriculum based video and web courses prepared by eminent professors from IITs and IISc Bangalore are purchased from NPTEL (National Programme On technology Enhanced Learning) and CDs are available in the department library.

 

Seminar Hall

The department has an exclusivewell-furnished and air conditioned seminar hall sponsored by alumni.The state of the art audio visual projection system aids in hosting effective lectures/ seminars on various emerging areas in order to update the knowledge of the faculty and students.

 

Laboratories

    1.Electronics Workshop

       This lab is fully equipped to carry out various experiments aimed at exposing students to the practical aspects of various fundamental concepts of Electronics. This lab enable the student to have practical skills of electrical wiring and creates basic awareness of safety measures. This subject also imparts fundamental knowledge of electronic components and familiarize to set up circuits by soldering and testing them.

  1. Electronic Circuits Lab

          This lab is an introductory experimental laboratory that explores the design, construction, and debugging of analog electronic circuits. This subject covers diodes, transistors, FETs and basic analog circuit design as applied to audio and radio frequency circuits. 

  1. Digital Electronics Lab

            This lab is meant for learning the basic concepts of digital electronics, introducing the principles and applications of digital devices and systems. It also adds practical flavor to the subject by introducing experiments that revolve around proof of basic Boolean functions including the operation of basic logic gates, examples of some combinational circuits such as adders, subtractors, decoders and encoders. The operation of basic flipflops is covered as well as examples of sequential circuits such as counters and shift registers. This lab will provide entry-level knowledge and skills for a wide range of occupations in digital applications.

  1. Analog Integrated Circuits Lab

           This lab focuses on imparting skills in designing and testing analog integrated circuits by exposing the students to a variety of practical circuits using various analog ICs. The familiarization of operational amplifier ICs and setting up of the circuits like oscillator, amplifiers, rectifiers, filters, multivibrators etc. based on Op-amp ICs are covered as part of this subject.

  1. Communication Engineering Lab

           This Laboratory focuses on training the students in both analog and digital transmission/ reception of signal. The students here start in the analog area by constructing the circuits of amplitude modulation, frequency modulation and phase modulation and later on to PAM, PPM etc. In addition to these, the lab consists of the fiber optic trainer which gives an overview on fundamentals of fiber optics communication and study of analog and digital links.

  1. Systems Lab

            It is a well functioning computer lab in the ECE department withsufficient number of computers. This lab is equipped with various communication softwares and circuit design simulation softwares, MATLAB, LABVIEW, PCB Design software (ORCAD). It also includes TMS 320c5416, 6713 series of DSP kits using latest version of Code Composer Studio. Moreover, this lab is connected to the campus network through OFC link.

  1. Embedded Systems Lab

           This lab is well equipped with most sophisticated equipments and latest softwares. The objective of this lab is to provide ample opportunities for the students to realize their skills in both hardware and software in implementing their project works. The lab has VLSI development environment based on Altera, Spartan, Cool runner and other FPGA kits. The students learn FPGA programming and simulation through XILINX ISE Software. The lab also has 8051 based Microcontroller kits, PIC Microcontrollers and Microcontroller based development boards. The lab provides complete understanding of development of embedded applications by training the students in programming and interfacing the various DSP Processors like TMS 320c 6713, 320c 243 using latest version of Code Composer Studio. Students also learn to operate various high end test instruments like Spectrum Analyser, Logic Analyser and Arbitrary Function Generator, Frequency Counter etc.

  1. Microwave Engineering Lab

            This lab provides practical knowledge in different techniques used for generation, transmission and reception of electromagnetic waves at Giga Hertz frequencies. Experiments include measurements of various properties and parameters of transmission as well as device characteristics. 

  1. Project Lab – Texas Instruments Innovation Centre (TIIC)

                  The Project Laboratory has a key role in promoting practical learning experience, a place where they develop creative proposals, team ethics, execute their final projects and can ignite their research/entrepreneurship skills. The department has a well-equipped industry supported innovation center cum laboratory with state of the art equipment and software to help the students carry out their projects in diverse areas like advanced microcontrollers, internet of things, robotics and analog/digital signal processing.

 1.Council of Electronics STudies (CEST)

           CEST is an association of the faculty and students of the Electronics and Communication Department started in late 90s under the guidance of Dr. Shanthi K.J. with many objectives that gain insights into latest technological developments to the students. With the support and guidance of the faculty, it has been providing the students a platform to sharpen their organizational skills and technical expertise. But later it became inactive for few years. Later in 2014Prof. (Dr.) Sheeja M.K. the former head of the department took the initiative and reconstituted CEST.On 29th August 2014 reconstituted CEST was inaugurated by Dr.Shaji Senadhipan, former principal of the college.

The objectives of the council are:-

  • To provide students with necessary supportive co-curricular training to enhance their curricular performance.
  • To update students with recent trends in industry.
  • To make the students learn new skills and upgrade existing ones.
  • To focus on setting the perfect platform for students to groom and nurture the qualities of teamwork, leadership, mutual understanding and co-existence and to provide exposure to public and executive communication.
  • To bridge the distance between the textbook syllabi taught and the practical application in industry.
  • To provide insight into core research areas of Electronics and Communication Engineering.

  1. IEEE Student Branch

          IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization for the advancement oftechnology. IEEE’s core purpose is to foster technological innovation and excellence for thebenefit of humanity. IEEE and its members inspire a global community to innovate for abetter tomorrow through highly cited publications, conferences, technology standards, andprofessional and educational activities. This Institution has a very active Student Branch which aims at providing technological advancements to its students and training them to beleaders of tomorrow. The members of IEEE Student Branch SCT are actively involved inorganising various technical workshops. The IEEE students chapter started off in SCT in 2009 and been very vibrant and expanding since then. The chapter grew day by day and now it has a total strength of nearly 70 student members. The student members get an opportunity to keep up to date with the technology and enjoy all the benefits offered to its members. The student chapter focuses on bringing the organizational and professional skill among its members through various activities. The student chapter organized many workshops, expert talks and various competitions for both members and non members. The weekly held seminars helps the members gradually build the confidence in public speech. The creativity and technical quest of the student members were given colours through the student branch Newsletter: epulse. The student chapter encourages students to participate in all the technical activities and help them become more responsible and remain committed to the cause. The chapter helps students learn subjects outside the curriculum by arranging short term training programmes. The student chapter also has a Women in Engineering (WIE) affinity group which encourages participation of women in engineering by funding various activities.

  • Newsletter for the year 2017-’18 was published in April 2018.
  • Department signed an MoU with Texas Instruments for the implementation of Texas Instruments University Programme in SCTCE in the areas of Advanced Microcontrollers, Robotics and IoT.

  • Sri. George M. Joseph of ECE Dept. received the “Prof S. Krishnankutty Memorial Distinguished Faculty Award”, given to the best faculty of the institution in 2018.
  • Dr. Sheeja M.K. and Smt. Bindu V organized an FDP on “Research Methodology: A step into the world of Research”, sponsored by KTU from 05-02-2018 to 09-02-2018.
  • CEST  organized a PCB Designing, Fabrication and Soldering Workshop titled, “Board Behind the Circuit” on 20th November 2018.
  • IEEE organized an “Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Workshop” on 20th November 2018.
  • Sri. Sachin Shankor Mannath , our alumnus of (2005 – 2009) batch, was part of the team that composed Hollywood film Lake of Fire’s songs, which got shortlisted for Oscar 2018 in Best Original Score Category.
  • Dr. Aravind V.J., our alumnus of (2002 – 2006) batch, who is currently working as Electronics Engineer, ST Microelectronics visited the college to deliver an expert lecture, “Talk on Visible Light Communication” on 22nd January 2018, as part of the “Back to School Programme” organized by CEST.
  • Dr. Vishnu Nandan , our alumnus of (2004 – 2008) batch, presently research scholar at University of Calgary, addressed
    the students of various semesters of our department on his work on Microwave remote sensing of snow covered first year Arctic sea ice.
  • Sri. Sujith S., student of 2014 – 2018 batch received the Idea Grant of 2 Lakhs (Scheme organized by Kerala Start up Mission for promoting entrepreneurship and innovation) from Hon. Chief Minister of Kerala .
  • The team consisting of Sri. Raoof Naushad, Sri. Vaishak Sajeev, Sri. Safwan Rashid, Kum. Alma Anvar  and Kum. Brahmadatha M. R. was among the 25 finalist teams of Yuva Mastermind 2018, jointly organized by Amal Jyothi Engineering College and Malayala Manorama. Their project got a funding of Rs. 10,000.
  • “Aerovators”, the team consisting of Kum. Aiswarya K.V., Sri. Adarsh M.S., Sri. Karthik Narayanan N. and Kum. Arya A.R. of final year ECE batch has been shortlisted to the pre-final round of Airbus Fly Your Ideas, a global competition designed
    by Airbus in partnership with UNESCO. Airbus Fly Your Ideas has shortlisted 51 from 270 ideas involving 72 countries.
  • The college music team including Kum. Meera S. Prasad, Sri. Himesh Gopan, Sri. Rahul G Sarma, from the department, won the first prize in the Ganamela in the Kerala University Youth Festival. The lyrics were by Kum. Anna mariam Ramacha Thykkadavil.
  • Sri. Manukulathilakan S.  secured second position in case study competition,Green Energy Summit 2018, IIT Chennai as part of Shastra 2018.
  • Kum. K.V.Aishwarya was selected as Infosys campus champ in 2017.
  • NPTEL local chapter was started in SCT College of Engineering in January 2018 with Smt. Preetha V.H., Assistant Professor in ECE as the SPOC.
